The one year game develpoment duel

Who is Ryan Campbell

Hey, I'm Ryan. I'm engaged to my wonderful fiance, Amanda. She keeps me responsible as I become a caveman when she's not around. I try to stay a young 31, but my grey hairs are quickly betraying me. Sports, activities, games, family and anything in front of a computer will generally keep me happy.

The first coding project I started on my own was a turn based game in C++. I remember crashing the computer once the hero had to walk more than 13 tiles. Pathing and genetic algorithms were a bit too much for me back in the day, so hopefully age and experience will see me through this time around. Regardless, there is nothing more exciting than being able to pursue a passion, so I'm loving this contest.

  • I currently play XCOM, Banner Saga, Kingdom Rush
  • I’ve loved playing Everquest, Final Fantasy Tactics, Front Mission 4
  • I listen to Black Keys, Eminem, Lumineers
  • I fear Robbers. Seriously, please lock the door.
  • I relax by iPad, Wine, Movies, Games
  • I watch Game of Thrones, HGTV, and cheesy shows like Arrow and Robin Hood
  • I read Scifi/Fantasy like David Gemmell and Patrick Rothfuss. Sadly, I don't read books as much these days.
  • I procrastinate on Uncrate, /r/gamedev, news.yc, 9to5mac
  • The future plays out like Eleysium. Rich people in a flying Apple Store.

What's this contest about?

Armed with little to no game development experience, the Brothers Campbell are attempting to make video games for a living. We believe the best way for us to learn is to do what comes naturally to brothers — Compete! The challenge is to see who can make the most successful video game on a budget of $25,000 and in one year’s time. The duel begins on April 7th, 2014 and we'll be documenting the journey.

How will you determine the winner?

It’s simple. The most profitable game wins. We’ll have 6 months to market the game after the one year development deadline on April 7th, 2015.

The Enemy

Chris is older than me, but he has wasted his years starting a family instead of honing his development skills. Anxious to step out of his shadow, my youth and superior intelligence will clearly crown me champion.
